The 2500 kVA, or 2.5 MVA, Pad-Mounted Transformer is one of Apexto's key options for large power distribution projects, especially where medium-voltage utility service must be stepped down for high-current 480V systems.
Configurations such as 34.5 kV to 480Y/277V are particularly relevant to North American industrial, data center, and high-density computing infrastructure. Other primary and secondary voltage combinations can also be engineered to suit the site.
Loop-feed or radial-feed arrangements, protection, taps, impedance, and low-voltage connections can be matched to the project single-line diagram. This model is best suited to large installations that require a substantial, standardized 2.5 MVA power block.

FAQs
Is a 2500 kVA transformer suitable for a 2 MW mining or data center load?
Yes, in many projects. A 2 MW load requires approximately 2,105 kVA at 0.95 power factor, leaving about 395 kVA for operating margin and auxiliary loads. If 2 MW refers only to miners or IT equipment, cooling and other site loads must be added before final sizing.
Is a 3000A switchgear enough for a 2500 kVA transformer at 480V?
A 2500 kVA transformer delivers approximately 3,007A at 480V at full load. A 3000A switchgear can be used when the system is intentionally limited below full transformer output, but it does not provide capacity to use the complete 2500 kVA rating. Final switchgear sizing should follow the expected load and protection design.
Why does a 2500 kVA transformer need so many parallel secondary cables?
Because the secondary current exceeds 3,000A at 480V. Multiple parallel conductors are typically required between the transformer and switchgear. The exact number depends on conductor size, copper or aluminum, termination ratings, installation method, and applicable electrical code.
Is busway or close-coupled switchgear better than parallel cables for a 2500 kVA transformer?
For very short transformer-to-switchgear connections, busway or close-coupled switchgear can reduce the number of large parallel cable runs. Parallel cables remain practical when more installation flexibility or distance is required.
What fault current can a 2500 kVA transformer produce at 480V?
With 5.75% impedance, a 2500 kVA transformer can produce approximately 52 kA of transformer-limited fault current at 480V. This value should be considered when selecting switchgear AIC/SCCR ratings and completing the short-circuit study.
If two 2500 kVA transformers are connected through a bus tie, can one transformer carry both buses if the other fails?
Only if the combined transferred load remains within the surviving transformer’s capacity. A bus tie provides redundancy and operating flexibility, but it does not turn one 2500 kVA transformer into a 5000 kVA source. Load shedding may be required during a transformer outage.
